GETTING MARRIED IN MAURITIUS

Anglican Church Wedding

As there is an increased demand for couples to have a religious wedding in Mauritius, we have spent time with our office in Mauritius investigating and finding the best churches for you to get married in. We have selected 2 beautiful churches in the north and in the centre of the island to maximise the convenience for our guests. Both churches are quietly situated and are well suited for small or large groups of guests.

In Mauritius the wedding process is divided into 2 parts
1) The Civil wedding, and
2) After your civil wedding (standard wedding) you may have a religious wedding in a place of worship of any faith.

The requirements of the Anglican church are:

• Birth certificate (3 copies).
• Certificate of confirmation (baptism) from your local priest in your home country (3 copies).
• Certificate from your home town hall that you are not already married.
• Copy of the wedding certificate (civil wedding) performed before the Anglican ceremony. Your civil wedding may be performed in Mauritius or in your home country before departure.
• All the documents should be sent to us at least 5 weeks before you arrive in Mauritius together with the documents for the civil wedding.

Conditions

1. Divorced persons cannot be married.
2. A translator is needed if the guests do not speak fluently either English or French.
3. One visit to the church is required before the day of the wedding. Many prefer two visits: one is for a chat with the priest and the other is for the ceremony rehearsal.
4. Weddings can be performed Monday through Friday but not during the 40 day Lent period of fasting prior to Easter.
5. The wedding would take about one hour and is usually performed in the afternoon. 16.00/16.30 is a good time.
6. The bride and groom should be of Anglican faith although Catholic/Anglican is possible.
