ESSENTIAL INFORMATION
-
BEACH
HOUSES v/s HOTEL ACCOMMODATION
Mauritius hotels are first class and if you enjoy being spoilt by
their excellent service and spend all your time soaking up the sun on
the beach, a hotel is right for you.
If however, you prefer independence and flexibility, especially if you
have children, or are cost-conscious, then one of our villas or
apartments is what's probably best for you.
You are free to go and come as you want, eat as and when you like
without the constraints of hotel life.
This independence will also allow you to enjoy the other charms of
Mauritius, the ideal place to enjoy a truly individual holiday at a
price which you will find most reasonable.
-
YOUR
HOLIDAY ADDRESS IN MAURITIUS
We will confirm the name reference of the house before you travel as you will
be required to write it on an immigration authorities card on
arrival.
-
DRIVING
IN MAURITIUS
Driving is on the left in Mauritius. Continental Europeans and
Americans, beware!
-
VISAS
& VACCINATION
Visas are not required for EEC and American passport holders. No
vaccination is required either unless you come from an infected
country.
-
DRINKING
WATER
Water is relatively safe to drink. However, visitors are advised
either to boil the water before consumption or use bottled water which
is available in all shops.
-
ELECTRICITY
Power supply is 230 volts and sockets are normally the British 3 pin
square standard. Visitors from continental Europe would usually need
an adaptor if they bring electrical appliances.
-
CLIMATE
Summer months (December to March) have an average temperature of 28 to
30 degrees with a high humidity factor, whereas Winter months (June to
August) are a mild 24 to 26 degrees with some evenings on the coast as
low as 16 to 18 degrees and requiring a pullover. As you can see,
Mauritius can be enjoyed the whole year round with mild temperatures
throughout.
-
TELEPHONE
Your house may be equipped with a telephone which is usually
restricted to local calls only which is normally offered free. You may
however be able to receive calls from overseas. The country code is
+230. If your house does not have a phone, we recommend that you
purchase a Mauritius Telecom card. Most supermarkets sell them and
many telephone booths all around the island take them.
Mauritius now also has a mobile telephone international GSM standard
network. Roaming is therefore useful and we suggest you arrange it
with your service provider before you travel.
-
HOUSE
MAIDS
Most of our houses and apartments are serviced (house cleaning,
bed-making etc). In some cases, the maids would also agree to wash and
iron your personal clothes as well as doing some light cooking. This
however is not covered in the house rent.
-
AIRPORT
TRANSFERS
Transfers from the Airport in the south-east of the island to the
usual destinations in the north-west are by taxi or private minibus
and normally take about an hour. As fares can vary enormously, in
order to avoid unfortunate surprises, we recommend that first-time
visitors to the Island and even regular ones request us to arrange for
a taxi or private minibus known to us to meet them. See our explanatory
page with details of decreasing rates scale etc.
-
FOREIGN
EXCHANGE
There are bank counters in the Airport Arrivals hall after clearing
Customs. We recommend that you change some money there for immediate
needs so as to avoid being without local currency when you leave the
Airport, the more so if it is a Saturday, Sunday or a Public Holiday.
-
SECURITY
Although Mauritius is by general standards a very safe place, petty
thefts and other misfortunes have been known to occur and these simple
precautions will ensure that you do not run unwanted risks that could
spoil the best of holidays. It is highly recommended that:
-
the
main entrance to your apartment or villa is kept locked whenever
you are on the beach;
-
doors
and windows are closed properly at night and house keys as well as
valuables kept away from windows and hidden from outside view;
-
beach
hawkers and the like are not invited indoors so that you may view
their wares more comfortably; and
-
great
care be taken before befriending local beachcombers.
-
FLIGHTS
Although we do not sell flights, we have an agreement with a couple of
travel companies that they would offer clients introduced by us the
best available rates for flights to Mauritius. Ask at the time of
booking.
-
OTHER
SERVICES
In addition, we work very closely with those operators of Car
Rentals, Scuba Diving and Big
Game Fishing, whom we have found to provide the very best service and rates to clients recommended by
us. They are people we know personally and believe they can be
trusted. We can therefore book your holiday car at the best available rates
(which you may well not be
able to obtain otherwise) with delivery at the Airport on arrival or
directly to your villa or apartment. Our recommendation however is
that you take our airport transfer, especially after a long flight,
and get your car delivered at your bungalow or villa the next morning.
