General
In the south west of Mauritius, 400m above sea level, the
village of Chamarel is surrounded by the Black River gorges park,
a protected natural heritage site where the World Wildlife Society
has saved several species from extinction like the pink pigeon and
green parrot.
Lakaz Chamarel is tucked away in a small valley at the
foot of Piton Canot mountain in magnificent tropical gardens . It
consists of the main house with a lounge, its kitchen and the
dining room. Spread around within the garden are 3 rooms (50 m2)
with veranda, open air bathroom, well-spaced, overlooking one of
the swimming pools, 4 further Superior rooms (60m2) with a terrace overlooking
the other swimming pool (16m) and
two thatch roof kiosk (bar
and lounge). Each room is equipped with a bathroom (linen
equipped) with an open air shower. IThe 2 circular double african-style 'rondavels' overlooking
the pond have now
been converted into a 75m2
Suite (Suite Ravenale) as from the 1st of July 2007.
These rustic rooms and suites for 2 have a different decor reflecting
the diversity of Mauritian cultures. Charming architecture blends
harmoniously with the natural environment to combine good taste
and refinement with simplicity, comfort and friendliness.
One hour drive from the airport or the capital
Port-Louis, and only 15 minutes to
the best beaches (Le Morne
& Baie du Cap), or to the coastal
villages of Black River and La Gaulette where you will find
supermarkets and shopping centres.
Your hosts
Your hosts, Frédérick Desjardins and his wife Aurélie, reside
on the spot.
Frédérick is the head of the house and has had 10 years catering
experience in large hotels, as well as participating in numerous
training courses under the guidance of world renowned chefs.
Very athletic, and with a passion for nature, he also acts as
guide in trekking outings. Whenever he is out, other house staff
members, some of whom also reside on the spot, are always present
to ensure perfect service.
The owners of Lakaz Chamarel are mauritians, the husband being
the director of 2 of the best reputed 5-star hotels in Mauritius
for the past 15 years and who has been in the hospitality industry
for over 25 years. His spouse has been responsible for all the
minute details of architecture and decorations and still spends
most of her time in improving the landscaping and interior design.
Whilst they do not themselves reside at Lakaz, their dream is to
build a haven of peace for their own benefit as well as that of
the house guests.
Meals
Wherever possible, home-grown produce is used.
Meals include continental breakfast (served between 7am and
10am) and dinner (served at 8pm), and lunch is on request.
Dinner: starter, main course, dessert, coffee, tea or herbal
tea
For lunch you may either go to the village (10 minutes walk) and
try one of the local restaurants or ask Lakaz staff to prepare it
(approximate cost: 15 Euros per person).

Lacaz Chamarrel
has created a new space, dedicated to the body care (massages
and a sauna) as from the 1st of July 2007.
As from the 1st
of November there will be 3 new suites (~90m2),
each one with a private swimming pool.
To upgrade the service, a ‘Maitre d’hotel’ who has been working for 30 years in 5-star hotel has
been recruited as from 1st of May 2007.
