SWAHILI HOUSE

The Swahili house is situated right in the heart of Stone Town.  Formerly used as an Indian merchant house in the 19^th century and then becoming one of the many Sultan families, it became a hotel only some years ago.  After renovations, the hotel has been restored into its original state with only a few changes.  It is now a sparkling hotel with traditional influences and modern day facilities in combination with authentic Swahili hospitality.

The Swahili House has 5 floors, 4 of which have 22 rooms spread across them and the top floor being  the rooftop terrace with restaurant and bar.  The floors are accessible via traditional Zanzibari staircase and an elevator.

The restaurant and bar are perfectly situated on the rooftop and overlooks the Indian Ocean.  You can enjoy a continental and full English breakfast buffet every morning, lunch or dinner or even a cocktail while indulging in the most spectacular views of Stone Town and the Swahili coastal area.  The a la carte menu offers a combination of  eastern and western influences, spices and flavours and includes a wide variety of freshly caught fish and seafood together with a wide selection of wines, international spirits and delicious cocktails with which you can enjoy a romantic sunset.

ACCOMMODATION

The rooms can be divided into 3 categories namely:

Sultan suites: large, spacious rooms with balcony, approximately 45 metres square

Deluxe rooms: standard size double or twin room, approximately 21 metres square

Suites: medium sized, spacious rooms with balcony, approximately 33 metres square

All the rooms are restored and decorated in traditional Swahili style, but adjusted to western standards such as European sized mattresses, AC and fans.  Most rooms feature an open bathroom including a shower and bath, which are ideal to relax after a busy day exploring Stone Town.

ACTIVITIES

The Swahili house being in the centre of Stone Town is close to all markets, shops, restaurants and other points of interest.  Professional guides can be organised to assist you while discovering Stone Town in order to get the maximum out of your visit.  There are also various trips which can be organised, such as spice farm, Jozani forest and also snorkelling in the magnificent menai bay.
