Less than an hour’s drive from the airport on the east coast of Zanzibar, in an area known as Kiwengwa, stands Sultan Sands island resort just next to its sister resort Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa. The Resort is on the most beautiful 25-acre stretch of subtly landscaped gardens decked with over 1000 palm trees, with a choice of 76 rooms built in single storey African style rondavels - each with two tastefully decorated rooms with a separate changing room leading into the superbly appointed en-suite bathroom. The Sultan Sands Island Resort stands where, until 2006, the La Villa Beach Club stood - then a standard 20 roomed hotel next to the Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa. The rooms are categorized into 2 groups: Pwani rooms and Bahari rooms. Each room has a spacious bedroom, separate dressing room, en suite bathroom and verandah/balcony. The furniture is traditional and a touch or modernism is added with split levels air conditioning, ceiling fans, satellite TV, mini bars, hair dryers, safes and phones. The rooms also have smoke detectors and fire alarms as a means of security. The Pwani rooms are built in a single storey traditional rondavels, each with 2 tastefully decorated bedrooms with separate changing rooms leading into a superbly appointed en suite bathroom. These rooms are split level with a lower level sitting area with a wide comfortable couch and are built on the rising grounds in beautiful landscaped gardens all facing the sea. The Bahari rooms which were the original Villa
Beach Club rooms, have been carefully modernized and refurbished. They are
right at the ocean edge, toes-in-sand villa type rooms.
The rooms are varied in size and structure within this accommodation
category, and they coalesce around the original, small swimming pool. DINING & WINING The Sultan Sands has a choice of 4 restaurants and bars. Mwambao restaurant is the main restaurant and is set just by the pool. It is a table d’hote restaurant serving buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are themed dinners from Indian to Italian to Swahili to BBQ Nyama Choma, Oriental, Trip around the world, Zanzibar and Seafood. Mawimbi Bar is the main drinks outlet serving guests at the pools and the Mwambao restaurant. Kivuli Bar & Restaurant is right on the beach and provides light mid day culinary delights such as salads, sandwiches and grills. They also serve beverages to guests by the pool and beach. facility for both the Sultan Sands guests as well as those of the Bluebay
